Move over spirulina and make room for moringa! Trending the past few years this superfood superstar known as “moringa,” is the latest green to grace your morning smoothies(see recipe below). The first time I heard about moringa, I was in a juice bar in Kauai a few years ago. I was used to wheatgrass shots, but wanted to try something new. Since then moringa has made nutrition headlines in the wellness industry. Native to the Himalayan foothills of South Asia this plant travels across the globe to us in a powdered form ready for our consumption. While the seeds, fruit, bark, root and fruit are edible the leaves are the most commonly consumed form in the US. Although you can find protein bars, teas, kombucha and other moringa-infused products, I prefer the powdered form. 1 tablespoon of moringa powder provides iron, calcium, fiber, protein, vitamin A, magnesium, potassium, zinc, copper, and other powerful plant compounds Not too shabby!
While there are multiple animal studies conducted on moringa’s health benefits, only a small number have used humans. Moringa is purported to help with such conditions as arthritis, hypertension, diabetes, thyroid disorders and kidney stones. While no adverse affects have been reported with powdered whole leaf preparations (as per a 2015 review of moringa’s safety,) it is important to take note of its source. If the soil contains heavy metals or other industrial toxins, they may end up in your body. This may be an issue with moringa sourced from India. Therefore, like any herb or supplement, make sure you do your research and note any possible interactions with medications or other supplements.
So how does it taste? It depends on how you consume it. Moringa can be slightly bitter which is why I like to mix a tablespoon into my smoothie, instead of taking a shot. Enjoy!
